She was able to break away from the Hiragi clan and met Guren Ichinose in 1996 where they fell in love. However, due to the taboo around their relationship she was forced to be separated from him ten years ago. Despite her feelings for Guren she was not willing to reveal their love and instead kept it hidden while he continued with his training as her cover-up fiance until the day they could meet again.

This led to her being able to manipulate others, including those that work for the government and even those of the Ichinose clan. Throughout the series, Mahiru has shown that she is more than just a simple vampire who swore an oath to Krul, but rather a woman with a conscience and a desire to help those she cares about. Even though she does some very immoral things, it is not out of pure evil but to try and give humanity a chance to fight back against the cruel destiny that was settled by the First.
